A lost or stolen computer puts healthcare organizations at risk
healthcare

Computrace from Absolute Software helps both payers and providers manage computers for regulatory compliance and reduced operational costs. As a necessary complement to encryption, Computrace can track computers regardless of their location, physically recover lost or stolen computers and remotely delete sensitive health information. Computrace also assists in regularly auditing computers and their status as well ensuring the complete removal of health information from computers at lease-end or retirement. With Computrace and HIPAA-mandated encryption in place, healthcare organizations are providing the highest level of protection for their computers and the sensitive information on them.

Encryption Alone is Not Sufficient Protection for Health Information

As healthcare organizations rapidly transition to paperless administrative processes and laptop computers, protecting health information from possible data breach is a growing concern. Encryption of health information is necessary, but is heavily reliant on diligent end-user effort to provide protection. Intentionally or by accident, busy nurses, physicians, HMO brokers and contractors contravene organizational policy – downloading health information onto portable computers without the protection of encryption. This reality leaves many health organizations exposed to the negative publicity of data breach disclosure regulations.

Computrace: Powerful End-Point-Security for Healthcare Organizations

End-point-security such as the Computrace computer theft recovery, remote health data delete and IT asset management solution, complement encryption by providing robust protection regardless of end-user involvement. With Computrace, healthcare organizations are protected from rising costs and public data breaches in the event that an unencrypted computer is lost or stolen. Read the healthcare whitepaper.

How it Works

The Computrace Software Agent is built into the BIOS of computers from the world’s leading manufacturers during the manufacturing process. By subscribing to Absolute Software’s Computrace solutions, healthcare organizations can log into a secure Online Customer Center to track the location of their computers, who is using them and what is installed on them. If a computer is lost or stolen, Computrace silently transmits its location information to the Absolute Theft Recovery Team who works with local law enforcement to recover the computer. The embedded Computrace technology also facilitates the remote deletion of health information. With embedded support in the BIOS of a computer, the Computrace agent is capable of surviving operating system re-installations, as well as hard-drive reformats, replacements and re-imaging.

What our customers are saying
Our focus in the IT department is to ensure patient information is safe at all times. This can be a real challenge for medical providers with high volume of physician’s mobile computers. At Medical Edge, we believe encryption and policy enforcement are a good start, but provide no guarantee that the information is secured. With Computrace, our IT staff can remotely delete sensitive data on lost or stolen laptops and run post-theft forensics to know if health information has been accessed on the missing computer. The services from Absolute are a remarkable and necessary complement for complete data protection. Computrace pays for itself.
